Whether you sell your tickets directly or use a third-party site, your most important concern is getting your money. While sites like Craigslist can't protect you against scammers, other sites will act as a liaison to ensure you get your payment. Of course these middlemen aren't always trustworthy either. Fly-by-night Websites have been known to sell your tickets and then disappear before you receive your money. If you’re considering posting your tickets on a reseller site, there are a few things to look for to ensure your security.
The first step is to look at the URL. When you’re browsing a Website, you’ll notice that the URL begins with “http:” however, if you’re required to enter personal information on any of the pages, you should notice that that the URL begins with “https.” That added “s” means you’re on a secure page. If it’s not there, it means the page could be viewed by a third-party.
In addition to the site’s URL, be sure to look for security seals from companies like Verisign, TrustE, BBB Online, and Hacker Safe. These seals of approval signify that a Website has met and adheres to a code of business standards.
If you’re unsure about a site, check to see if it belongs to the National Association of Ticket Brokers (NATB), a non-profit trade association whose primary function is to promote consumer protection and educate the public about the ticket broker industry. NATB members must adhere to a Code of Ethics to remain in good standing.
